Penuin is a strip of shophouses in Batam that’s quietly turned into one of the city’s hottest cafe and food hubs, especially once the sun starts dipping in the late afternoon. It’s also super accessible from Harbour Bay, just ±15 minutes away. So, bookmark these spots for your next Batam trip.

1. Gazoz Cafe

Inspired by Chef Gunawan’s time in Australia, the menu here plays with different textures and balanced flavours across breakfast, brunch, hearty lunch and dinner mains, and a solid dessert lineup. It’s popular enough that guests from Singapore have been known to come back two days in a row just for breakfast.

The star of the show is the Truffle Mushroom Croissant, a buttery, flaky pastry paired with a poached egg that spills a perfectly runny yolk. Don’t stop there though, the mains and desserts are worth exploring too.

3. Aroi Cafe

Aroi Cafe is a Thai restaurant with recipes sourced directly from a Thai partner who owns a restaurant back in Thailand. Many of the ingredients and seasonings are imported too.

The cafe itself is small and simple, but the food delivers plenty of character. Expect a creamy Tom Yum loaded with fresh prawns, crunchy Som Tum, aromatic Thai Basil Chicken, and Mango Sticky Rice to finish. Whether you’re rolling in solo, as a couple, or with a group, there’s plenty here to work through.

4. Rambucci, Cimuka and Cucika

Need a reset in between cafe-hopping? This trio of hair, skin, and foot care studios in Penuin has you covered from head to toe, all within walking distance of each other.

Rambucci is a hair care studio specialising in scalp treatments — the process analyses, washes, treats, and styles the scalp, all while giving a full-body massage. Treatment starts with a scanner-based scalp check, followed by a therapist recommendation. The experience felt personalized and comfortable, with quality facilities and equipment that made the price feel worth it.

Cimuka is a beauty clinic that skips the upselling with clearly listed package prices and treatments suited to your actual skin condition. While the treatments are primarily for adults, if children want a treatment, the clinic usually offers a facial massage.

Cucika is a foot care studio whose signature toe treatment starts with a 10-minute herbal foot soak using soap and mineral salt, followed by exfoliation, peeling, brushing, and gentle foot care to slough off dead skin. You can also pick a scrub variant while the therapist keeps the whole session calm and unhurried.

5. Soi by Nick

Thai Tea Bingsu
Thai Tea French Toast

Soi by Nick is a café by Chef Nick, Top 3 MasterChef Indonesia Season 11. The name “Soi” means small alley in Thai, which fits since the café is located in one of Penuin’s alleys.

Their menu spans sweet and savory. On the sweet side, there’s Thai Tea Bingsu made with finely shaved ice, a rich Brûlée Cheesecake with a caramelized top, and Thai Tea French Toast served with two sauces and vanilla ice cream. For something more filling, the Soi Curry Croissant comes stuffed with egg, chicken, and vegetables in a warm curry sauce. On the drinks side, there’s the smooth Ajisai 2.0 Matcha Latte and the signature 3D Cappuccino, known for its kitten latte art.

6. Itc.h Cafe

If you have been seeing salt bread all over Batam food accounts lately, this is where it’s coming from. Itc.h is a small, cosy cafe in Penuin built entirely around Japanese-style salt bread, and it’s earned a reputation as one of the “hypest” salt bread cafes in the city.

Their bestsellers are the Milk Cream, the soft, buttery bread with a smooth, not-too-sweet milk cream filling, and the Garlic Cheese, a savoury option with clear garlic flavour and a creamy cheese finish, still soft and fluffy underneath. Pair either with the Apple Oolong Cheese Foam, where sweet-tart apple meets a noticeable oolong aroma and a creamy foam top that ties the whole thing together.

7. Lamoist Signature

Mention Lamoist, and everyone immediately thinks of layer cake. But there’s a whole different side of Lamoist waiting for you in the heart of the Penuin area. Lamoist Signature Penuin is a stunning restaurant with a warm, vintage interior inspired by old-fashioned European cafes. You’ll find the “Shimeji Mushroom Corner” here, a favorite photo spot for visitors, created because most of their menu items feature mushrooms.

With a menu that brings together premium ingredients and handmade techniques, Lamoist Signature is a wonderful recommendation for anyone craving a special treat. Be sure to make a reservation if you’re planning to visit at night.

8. Yi Gan Er Jing

Tucked up a small staircase and easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, Yi Gan Er Jing is Batam’s first Chinese-inspired bar, complete with live Mandarin music every night and Chinese-style decor that sets it apart from every other bar in the city.

For drinks, go for the Pink Lady, a tropical, fruit-forward cocktail that’s smooth, sweet, and an easy pour if you want something lighter on the alcohol. To snack on, the Fried Lunch Meat is a bar bite of thick luncheon meat fried with an egg coating. It’s a simple snack, but it pairs well with the cocktail.
