If you’re the kind of traveler who plans a trip around a good cup of coffee, Batam has a quiet coffee scene worth discovering. It’s home to a growing crop of specialty coffee roasters, each with their own personality, their own bean sourcing philosophy, and honestly, their own reason to make the trip.

We visit three of Batam’s most talked-about coffee roasters, Pippo, Sreg, and Tatido, to try the menu, meet the baristas, and see what makes each one worth the stop. Here’s what we found.

1. Pippo Coffee Roasters

If you take beans, roast profiles, and brewing variables seriously, Pippo Coffee Roasters is worth the trip. Located inside an industrial park, this spot is all about coffee.

The building reads like just another warehouse in the complex. But push open the doors, and the industrial shell disappears. You’re welcomed by a striking circular coffee bar and a working roasting machine humming away in the background. It feels less like a cafe and more like a backstage pass to how coffee actually gets made.

Pippo started life purely as a coffee supplier and retailer, sourcing beans from both local and international origins. Over time, they turned their factory floor into a space where people could experience that craft firsthand, and the result is a destination built for true coffee purists. In fact, they’re so committed to the bean that you won’t find a single non-coffee drink on the menu.

For travelers who want to go deeper than just a cup, Pippo also runs a two-hour coffee-making course, a great way to learn the art of brewing straight from the people who roast the beans themselves.

We started with the Mocha Iced Shaken Espresso, a rich, chocolatey base with a hint of mint, shaken vigorously into a refreshing, silky finish.

Next came the Malt & Peel Arabica Blend, grown in the highlands of Garut, which has a fun twist: on its own, it’s bold and earthy, but add milk and it transforms into something warm and comforting, like cashew cookies and oat cereal.

To close things out, the Peachia Blend, a filter blend combining beans from Bali Kintamani and Tana Karo, delivered a natural sweetness that’s bright, clean, and dangerously easy to drink.

Before you leave, grab a bag of freshly packaged beans from the shelves. The baristas will point you toward the ideal roast and grind for brewing at home.

2. Sreg Coffee Roasters

If you’re looking for a quiet private coffee spot rather than a busy commercial cafe, Sreg Coffee Roasters is a genuine hidden gem. Tucked inside a quiet residential area, it sits in a charming house that makes the whole space feel comfortable and welcoming.

The window sign says it best: “Not Your Regular Morning Brew,” setting the tone for the whole visit. Sip from their signature mug, printed with the words “a feeling of balance,” and you’ll understand why regulars treat this place like a second home.

Sreg’s menu covers every mood and every time of day, with a focus on precision brewing and unique processing methods, including anaerobic and fruit-fermented beans for their manual pour-overs.

Altieri Mimas Estate Sreg Coffee
Mont Blanc and Caramel Cloud Latte Sreg Coffee

We started with the Altieri Mimas Estate, a filter coffee that’s light and delicate, with tea-like notes of jasmine and apricot. On the cold side, the Mont Blanc turned out to be the cafe’s most-requested iced drink, topped with a thick layer of soft cream for a lighter, refreshing sip. For something richer, the Caramel Cloud Latte delivered a sweet, creamy cup that’s perfect for those who like their coffee on the indulgent side.

Pair any of these with their popular caramelized toast or pastries for a proper coffee break. Before heading out, browse their retail shelf of beans sourced from local and international regions, perfect for brewing at home or gifting to someone back home.

Their signature drink, the Dirty Latte, comes with a barista-recommended “three-sip rule.” Drink it straight for the first two sips to taste the bold espresso, then stir before your third sip for a smooth, sweet, creamy transformation. It’s like two drinks in one glass.

Beyond espresso, Tatido is known for its colorful filter coffee tastings, pouring exclusive, high-quality beans from around the world at their coffee bar. What really stands out is the team. The baristas are warm, patient, and happy to chat through the menu if you’re not sure what to order.

We started with the Dirty Latte, following the three-sip rule exactly as recommended, and it lived up to the hype.

From there, we sat at the coffee bar to try three different filter coffees. First up was the Las Alasitas #14 from Bolivia. It flips the usual “coffee is bitter” assumption on its head, tasting light and sweet with notes of peach and jasmine, and a soft floral finish.

Next was the Esmeralda Aguilla 4BANC from Panama, grown by a farm known worldwide for its high-quality beans. It had a delicate taste with hints of white grape, jasmine, and citrus.

We closed out the tasting with the Kalamuasal, the one homegrown pick of the lineup, sourced from Aceh, Indonesia. It stood out with fruity, floral flavors of hibiscus, red berries, and rosella.

Before you leave, grab a bag of their roasted beans. The baristas will gladly guide you and recommend the best beans to bring back home, whether it’s for your own kitchen or as a gift.
