Gazoz Cafe brings Australian cuisine to Batam with a homey touch. We visited the spot in Penuin and found a cozy, modern space that suits a lazy breakfast, a proper brunch, or a quiet coffee break after a busy morning exploring Batam. The cafe stays open until 9 PM, so it works well for dinner too.

Gazoz builds its identity around an Authentic Australian Brunch concept. The cafe wants to introduce visitors to international flavours, especially the mix of Australian and Asian influences that shapes the menu. This positions Gazoz as one of the few cafes in Batam that focuses specifically on Australian-style brunch food.
The Face Behind Gazoz
We talked directly with chef Gunawan Wu, the owner, during our visit. He greets guests personally and keeps things humble despite his credentials. He holds a chef certification and teaches at a culinary school, and he curates and prepares every dish on the menu himself.
He told us he wants guests to focus on the food and the experience, not on him. That attitude carries through the whole cafe. The staff greet guests warmly and check in without hovering, and the whole team seems to share the same guest-first approach.
What to Order

Gazoz’s Truffle Mushroom Croissant earns the most praise in reviews and stands as the cafe’s signature item. The croissant comes out crispy on the outside and soft inside, and the kitchen finishes it with a creamy truffle sauce and a perfectly poached egg with a runny yolk. The mushroom adds an earthy depth that balances the richness of the sauce. Order this one first.

The Spaghetti al Calamari con Pomodoro balances a spicy tomato sauce with sweet and sour notes and pairs it with fresh, tender calamari. The pasta holds its texture well and doesn’t turn mushy under the sauce. This dish won a Gold Medal at The 7th La Cuisine 2025.
The Confit Potato uses the French confit technique to turn the potatoes ultra-soft, then adds crispy fried potato for contrast and pickled onions for acidity. Each bite carries three textures: soft, crispy, and bright. It works well as a side dish or a light snack between bigger plates.
Drinks Worth Trying

The drink menu leans simple and doesn’t overcomplicate things. The Strawberry Matcha Clouds blends smooth matcha with strawberry jam for a clean, silky texture without fruit chunks. The Latte, made with a Java and Brazil Arabica blend, comes out smooth and nutty and pairs well with the savoury menu. The Fresh Summer mocktail mixes strawberry jam sweetness with soda fizz and a hint of orange. It works well on a hot Batam afternoon and suits guests who want something light and non-alcoholic.
Desserts

The Coconut Agogo layers coconut cream, chocolate, oatmeal ginger crunch, and passionfruit jam into one dessert. It delivers creamy, sweet, tangy, and crunchy notes at once, and guests order it as often as the croissant. The passionfruit cuts through the richness and keeps the dessert from feeling too heavy. This dish won Most Outstanding Pastry Chef 2020.
The Flan Pastry uses non-dairy milk, which keeps the sweetness light. It comes with a slightly crunchy crust and chocolate chips on top. The caramelised edges add a bit of bitterness that balances the soft custard center.
The Davao Melt is a seasonal collaboration with The Embassy Chocolate that runs until August. It’s a molten brownie-style cake served with vanilla ice cream and cookie crumbles. The chocolate stays rich without feeling heavy, thanks to a slight bitter note. Guests who want this dish should visit before the collaboration period ends.
