Anchor Café and Roastery

First stop: Anchor Cafe and Roastery, where the food is so photogenic, it might just steal your followers. Picture this: cupcakes that look like they’re ready for their Vogue shoot and coffee beans roasted so perfectly, you’d swear they have a tiny dragon in the back doing the roasting. No dragons were harmed in the making of their coffee, but hey, a little fantasy never hurt anyone.

Must try: Sweet & Smoky Barbecue Sandwich ($10+) and Fireplace Coffee ($3+)

Volla Social House

Welcome to VOLLA, Batam’s answer to “How many hipsters can you fit in a coffee shop?” Spoiler alert: a lot. Feeling thirsty? Brace yourself for an avalanche of beverage options. Coffee? Check. Tea? Obviously. Milkshakes and frappes for the sweet toothed? You bet. Juices for the health nuts? Got ’em. And for those looking to jazz up their Instagram stories, we’ve got beers, soju, sangrias, and more – because hydration comes in many forms. There are also food offerings from from Asian delights to Western wonders.

There are indoor roller coasters and bumper cars (those two are separate rides, although how fun would it be if there were roller coaster bumper cars?). There are carousel swings and carnival games (like “Guess If Your Carney Has a GED!). Go. At the very least the lights will mesmerize the kids, and you’ll get a few minutes of peace while they’re dazed.

MoMoo Juice Bar & Coffee

MoMoo Juice Bar, a gem hiding in plain sight right next to the Harbour Bay Seafood Restaurant in Harbour Bay Terminal. Walking in, I half-expected to be handed a hardhat – the place was dripping in that modern industrial chic vibe that’s all the rage, with black steel meeting the wild, untamed greenery of potted plants. It was like stepping into a P.S. Cafe clone, complete with a juice bar shrine at its heart, soaring ceilings, and enough greenery to make a jungle jealous.

Our squad, being suckers for anything that makes you go “aww,” beelined for the bunny buffet. Hand us a cup of carrots, and bam, we’re the bunny whisperers, mobbed by a fluffle of furballs. And surprise, surprise, it’s not just a hare affair – we’ve got undercover guinea pigs crashing the party, trying to pass off as mini bunnies with their pint-sized ears and all.

They’ve got this outdoor area too, for those who like their sea breeze with a side of eardrum-busting beats from the neighboring music bar and pub. “Tranquil” it was not.

They offer everything from pasta and pizza to fusion mains. But hey, we were there post-dinner, so we made a beeline for the desserts and sweets, because priorities.

Liminal Coffee + Bites

Liminal Coffee + Bites is the latest hotspot where the cool kids and family squads unite for a feast of the senses. It’s like the Bermuda Triangle of cafes – once you step in, you’re lost to the outside world, thanks to its cozy vibes and Instagram-worthy nooks that’ll have your feed looking like a lifestyle influencer’s dream.

This joint is nestled in the high-rolling streets of The Sukajadi, striking the perfect balance between “Oh, this old place?” and “Check out my latte art!” It’s the kind of spot where you can drag your friends, your work buddies, or even your Aunt Edna for a good time.

In short, Liminal Coffee + Bites is where you go to level up your that perfect ‘gram, and maybe, just maybe, enjoy some quality time with your favorite humans. Because let’s face it, it’s not just about the food and drinks; it’s about showing the world you’re at the cool table.

Hoods Coffee

Just a hop, skip, and a 15-minute speed demon drive from the Batam Ferry Terminal, you’ll find a coffee haven that’s so Instagrammable, your phone might just start snapping photos by itself. This place is decked out with wood so simple, you’ll wonder if you’ve stepped into a chic lumberjack’s living room, complete with monsteras so big, they’re practically auditioning for a role in “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Feeling a rumble in the jungle? Dive into the Truffle Beef Donburi, priced at a cool Rp 88,000 (~S$8.40). It’s like a hug in a bowl, with beef so tender, it practically serenades your taste buds, all swimming in a sea of umami goodness. The truffle oil’s there to make sure your olfactory senses don’t feel left out, with a spring onion garnish that’s fresher than your last detox.

For the sweet-toothed rebels, the Caramel Walnut Croffle at a mere Rp 26,000 (~S$2.50) is your ticket to pastry heaven. It’s the Frankenstein’s monster of desserts – part croissant, part waffle, all delicious. Drizzled with honey and topped with walnuts, it’s the crunchy, sweet treat you didn’t know you needed.

And for those who like their coffee with a side of dirt – metaphorically speaking – the Dirty Cream Latte (Rp 52,000/~S$5) is a sight to behold and a delight to sip. Imagine espresso shots doing the tango with creamy milk foam – it’s a dance party in a cup.

Biscotti Cakery, Batam

Ah, the jewel of Batam’s cafe scene, where the chairs hug you back and the ambiance whispers sweet nothings. It’s my go-to chillax palace, but let’s be real, it’s the sugar rush that reels me in.

Now, lean in close – I’m basically a walking, talking dessert myself. A real “sweet guy,” if you will. So, when I see a lineup like Cheesecake that’s creamier than my last pick-up line, Blackout chocolate cake that’s darker than my ex’s heart, Matcha mille crepes that are layers upon layers of green goodness, and Macarons that pop like my bright ideas, I know I’m in the right spot.

And the cookies! Oh, the cookies. I nearly forgot, but how could I? They were my first love here. Still as scrumptious as the day we met. So, if you ever find yourself in this cozy corner of Batam, remember: it’s not just a cafe, it’s a sweet retreat for the dessert-hearted like me.

Roasteree Cafe & Roastery
https://youtu.be/D37ORUuyQmc?si=GhFXq4_y8rBa-0YR

I’ll say this about the Roasteree — they like their art big! If you have four hours to kill, go through every piece of the mural behind their stage, it’s gorgeous, it’s worth it, and it’s big! The ambiance is what makes RC&R, it’s got a darkish, Edgar Allen Poe on a laptop feel that I appreciated.

But there’s also the contrast of the live entertainment on the rooftop, which is pure jam, and the bands they pick are always spot on. Plus, they use the word “roast” twice in their name! You can’t get more roasty than that. And they have a sign that says, “Sorry, No Internet. Talk to Each Other.” Perfect. I like my coffee with some snark in it. Well done, roast roast.
