Batam Zoo Paradise: Worth Visiting For A Family-Friendly Day Out

We recently spent a morning there to see for ourselves whether it’s actually worth visiting. Here’s how it went, from the moment we walked in to the moment we left.

Walking In

The moment we stepped through the gate the heat hit us. But that had more to do with Batam’s dry season than the zoo itself. Fans are scattered generously around the grounds. On a cooler day you’d probably barely notice.

The space isn’t huge. It’s a comfortable standard size to walk around. What struck us most, though, was how clean the paths felt underfoot. There wasn’t the usual heavy stench you brace yourself for at zoos like this. It was only once we got closer to the enclosures that we caught a natural earthy animal smell. That’s just what comes with having living creatures around. Nothing that made us want to hold our breath.

With that first worry out of the way, we moved further in to see how the animals themselves were doing.

The Animals Looked Healthy

This was the part that really won us over. Every animal we passed looked well fed and calm. Not a single one seemed underweight or distressed.

During our visit only the male raccoon was on display. The female was pregnant and close to giving birth. Keepers kept her away from the crowds entirely rather than risk stressing her out for the sake of a good photo op. It’s a small choice. But it says a lot about where their priorities lie.

Wandering further in we spotted baby goats so young they’d basically still be in primary school if you scaled their age up to human years. The ducks and koi told the same story. Plenty of small healthy fry swam alongside plump well-fed koi that looked almost too round for their own good. Watching a place actively breed healthy animals, rather than just display tired ones, tugged at our hearts a little more than we expected.

A big part of that probably comes down to how involved visitors get to be. Feed baskets are available to buy around the enclosures, priced between Rp10,000 – Rp20,000 each, so kids can get hands-on and feed some of the animals themselves instead of just watching from behind a fence. It’s a small detail, but it turns the visit into something a lot more interactive.

It was around this point that we ran into the person who ended up making the whole visit.

Meet Pandu – The Keeper

Mas Pandu, the keeper, walked us through fact after fact about the animals with rare enthusiasm, patient with every question the kids around us threw at him. He clearly cared just as much about the animals’ wellbeing as he did about keeping them safe. We happened to visit alongside a group of kindergarten and primary school kids on a field trip, which turned out to be the perfect moment to see him and the other keepers in action.

Up Close And Personal

One stop let us hold a small grey monkey. It stayed relaxed and odourless, its fur so soft it barely felt real. At one point it wriggled free to hide under its enclosure. The second its keeper looked tired it wandered right back on its own.

Then there was the raccoon. Raccoons have a reputation for smelling less than pleasant, but this one carried barely a trace of it. Its fur was soft and clearly well groomed, quite the contrast to a raccoon we once encountered at another animal exhibition that reeked and looked matted.

The tortoises impressed us next, mostly for their sheer size. Their shell was completely free of moss, which only happens with regular scrubbing. And the birds we got to hold surprised us too, with how soft their feathers felt.

More Than Just Animals

Beyond the enclosures, Batam Zoo throws in a few extras that turn the visit into a full day out rather than a quick stroll. There’s a kids’ pool, a foam party area where suds spill straight into the water, and a rainbow slide that turned out to be genuinely fun to try. Staff stood watch at both the top and bottom the entire time and the harnesses felt properly secure.

Is Batam Zoo Worth Visiting?

It’s easy to see why Batam Zoo has become such a popular spot for school trips. Handwashing stations dotted around the park sealed the deal, a small but thoughtful touch for little hands that had just spent the morning petting animals.
